Sport

At Sefton High School, the sports program is comprised of several components. These are

• integrated sport (Gala days) (Years 7-8)
• grade sport (Years 9-11)
• recreational sport (Years 9-11)
• carnivals (Years 7-12)
• knockout competitions (Years 7-12)
• representative competition level (Zone, Region, State) Years 7-12)

Integrated sport

Integrated sport involves Years 7-8. Students in these years undertake sport through an integrated approach within their PDHPE lessons. Various sports are taught within this program and students have the opportunity to participate in 4 gala days over the two years covering over 10 different sports. The gala day concept involves selecting teams, training and playing competition games against other Year 7 and 8 students in a full day carnival.

Grade sport

Grade sport involves weekly competition between the ten schools in the Bankstown School Sport Zone. It is played on a Tuesday afternoon. Students in Years 9-11 are involved in the grade sport program. There are a variety of different competitions in Terms 1-3 covering different sports. There are boys’, girls’ and mixed sports offered covering both summer and winter sports. Semi finals and finals are played with awards given to the premiers of each competition. Grade sport is played at central venues.

Recreational sport

Recreational sport is played on a weekly basis on Tuesday afternoon. Students in Years 9-11 may elect to participate in recreational sport which is non-competitive. We offer over 15 different recreational sports across the year which cater for student interests. Sports are conducted both at school and at surrounding community facilities. The recreational sport program runs from Terms 1 to 4.

Carnivals

At Sefton High School we have 3 sport carnivals each year The Swimming Carnival is held in Term 1. Early Term 2 is when the Cross Country Carnival and the Athletics Carnival are conducted. All 3 carnivals require full student attendance and participation. They provide students with the opportunity to compete against each other in a friendly, competitive atmosphere. Although the best performers are rewarded with selection in the school team to compete at Zone Championships, the core aim of each carnival is to maximise student enjoyment and participation in physical activity.

Knockout competitions

Sefton High School is an active participant in the Combined High Schools Knock-out Competitions in many sports. Teams are coached by teachers and played against other schools in the Sydney South West Sport Region. They continue through the draw for each sport until they are defeated. In recent years, Sefton has performed very well in these competitions with Table Tennis and Basketball teams competing well in both Regional and State competitions. Most knockout teams are open aged and cater for boys and girls. A few sports also have a junior competition in which the school also enter teams.

Representative competition levels

As part of the Combined High Schools School Sport Association, students have the opportunity to represent in various sports at higher levels of competition. Students can first represent the school at the Bankstown Zone championships in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics together with many other sports. Next they can represent the Zone at the Sydney South West Regional Championships. Success at regional level will see students gain selection in the regional team to compete at the CHS State Championships. This is the highest level of competition under the Department of Education banner. There are also NSW All Schools and Australian Championships which students can compete at if successful at the CHS level.
